Donations Needed for Communities United Open Air Markets

Here's How You Can Help Stave Off Childhood Hunger

By Jenna Amyot November 1, 2024

Did you know an estimated 21.1% of households in Massachusetts with children are facing food insecurity? That’s one-in-five households with kids. As if the thought of kids being hungry isn’t bad enough, food insecurity is linked to performance in school and lifelong challenges. To put it this way – when you’re hungry, it’s hard to think about anything else. Imagine a child trying to learn in a classroom while hungry. Over multiple weeks, months, years.

Communities United, Inc. is one of the most amazing resources we have locally, because it not only provides affordable access to early education (including regular SEL) but it is also dedicated to providing families with accessible nutrition and healthy foods. Its centers supply families with fresh fruits and vegetables, toiletries, and non-perishable items through its Open Air Markets every month. Children are given the opportunity to “shop” with their families and pick out their favorite foods as well. When available, the Open Air Markets also have books, toys, clothing, and shoes for families.

Communities United relies heavily on community donations to ensure that these markets are fully supplied for families in need. If you are interested in donating, contact Woburn Creative Start by calling 781-932-9578 or emailing donna@communitiesunitedinc.org for drop off or pickup.
