The Conquer Chiari Walk Across America Comes to Woburn on Sept. 21

It's the Single Biggest Fundraiser for Research on this Rare Condition

By Jenna Amyot September 7, 2023

On Saturday, Sept. 21, Woburn will once again be the site the Conquer Chiari Walk Across America. This walk is incredibly important for two reasons. One: this walk is the largest fundraiser for research on this rare condition. Two: My best friend's son, Liam, was diagnosed with this condition and had brain surgery to address some of its most serious complications before he turned two years old. Now, at almost 10 years old, he continues to face complications and, despite them, inspires everyone he meets with his tenacity, spunk and resilience. This walk is an opportunity for us all to come together in honor of Liam, while raising money for others who live with Chiari.

What is Chiari?

Chiari malformation (kee-AH-ree mal-for-MAY-shun) is a rare condition in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. It occurs when part of the skull is misshapen or smaller than is typical, pressing on the brain and forcing it downward (source: Mayo Clinic). This malformation led to Liam having hydrocephalus, which was one of the reasons he needed brain surgery at such a young age. Years later, Liam needed surgery to correct a tethered spinal cord, another complication of Chiari malformation.

There is no cure for Chiari (yet) and we need more research on this rare condition so that people who live with don't just find ways to manage symptoms or complications of Chiari, but rather live free of them.

How can you help?

Well, of course, you can walk. You can join our team, Liam's Ninjas. Or, you can donate. Or, simply, spread the word. Someone you know may be living with symptoms of Chiari but hasn't been diagnosed with it. While the condition is rare, it's only diagnosed with an MRI, so it's possible many more people are living with Chiari than we even know.
