Playground Spotlight: Playstead Park (Medford)

Surrounded by soccer fields, baseball diamonds and a tennis court

We love, love, love Playstead Park. And, plenty of others do, too. It's a hot spot for kids' birthday parties, school field days and a favorite among local families, including mine. Playstead Park is where my son learned to climb, gained confidence to go down the big slides by himself and it's where he made his first friends.

What's to love about this park? It has three great climbing zones, one for toddlers, one for elementary school-aged kids, and one for older kids. It's got tons of slides and swings, though one of the best things about it has little to do with the playground itself and more to do with the nearby train tracks. On any given trip to the playground, you're likely to see at least one train go by, which is a showstopping event for all the kids. On late fall or warm winter days when the trees are bare, you can see the trains entirely, which delights pretty much every kid there.

Fair warning, though, this playground almost 100% wood chips, which mean it's not great if you need to move a stroller around the structures (a very specific "me" problem, I know), so I wouldn't deem it stroller friendly. It also has virtually NO natural shade to cool down the climbing structures, so we didn't frequent it this past summer because it was so hot, BUT the lack of shade does come in handy if it rains because everything dries fairly quickly!

It's also worth mentioning that down the road is possibly the best breakfast spot in Medford, the Magnificent Muffin and Bagel Shoppe. So we often stop there on our walk to the park to get a muffin and a breakfast sandwich and recommend you do, too.
